writer of the Great Seal
Nature of request
[This petition is partly illegible]Thomas Stanford, writer of the Great Seal both in the time of the King's father and of his grandfather, states that by force of a judgment in a plea of trespass he was imprisoned, and has been imprisoned for seventeen years; but that in the record and process of this judgment there are various errors. He asks the King to order John Fortescue, the Chief Justice, to bring the record, process and judgment before the King in the present parliament, and that if any errors are found, the judgment might be reversed.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
People mentioned
[Henry IV], King of England
[Henry V], King of England
John Fortescu (Fortescue), knight, Chief Justice [of King's Bench].
Note
The reference to John Fortescue, Chief Justice of King's Bench, dates this petition to between 1442 and 1461. SC 8/17/1307 and SC 8/17/1308 would seem to suggest that a date in the earlier part of this period is more likely.
