Description

Name(s)
de Clare, Gilbert
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Clare requests remedy concerning the keepership of the manor and park of Havering which his father bought from Mountfichet along with the bailiwick of the forest of Essex as he has petitioned several times at parliament and was answered that because the queen held the manor that Abel and East Dean should come and speak for her as to why Clare should not have the office. They stated that the office was taken into the queen's hand because Thomas de Clare's parker committed a great trespass against the queen, and the parker died in prison, Thomas de Clare died in Ireland, and it has remained in the queen's hand for default of suit and by the petitioner's minority.
Nature of endorsement
It is to be commanded by writ of Chancery to Abel that he appear before Brabazon and his colleagues at the quindene of Michaelmas to show or say what he knows as to why the keepership should not be delivered to Clare. If he does not show anything that is sufficient then Brabazon and the others are not to fail to do justice. Clare is to sue there if it seems expedient to him. The petition is to be sent to Brabazon under the king's seal of Chancery.
