Reference
SC 8/174/8702B
Date
[c. 1326]
Description
Petitioners
John de Warenne, earl Warenne.
Name(s)
de Warenne, earl Warenne, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Warenne requests the grant of the castles of Sandal and Conisbrough and the lands in Yorkshire, the castle of Holt and the lands in Bromfield and Yale and elsewhere in Wales with the issues of the same since the earl of Lancaster's death. The earl of Lancaster had seized the castles of Sandal and Conisbrough from Warenne and all his lands in Yorkshire, and when Warenne came to Pontefract to reach a good accord he was forced to grant these castles and lands as well as Holt castle, his lands in Bromfield and Yale and elsewhere in Wales, and the reversion of his Norfolk land to the earl of Lancaster.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning the lands in Yorkshire let the muniments of the earl of Lancaster be searched to see if anything can be found to show that Warenne made the quitclaim by force. If nothing can be found there or elsewhere then let people be assigned to enquire of the disseisin, and if the quitclaim was made by force or by Warenne's will, and let justice be done.2) Concerning the lands of Bromfield and Yale, because Warenne said that his writing made to the earl of Lancaster was for the term of life, and was not indented, it is commanded to Baldok that he search for the deed, and if it is found that it was made for life then let the lands be delivered, and if nothing can be found let the truth of the matter be enquired of and justice done.
Places mentioned

Holt, [Denbighshire, Wales]
Bromfield and Yale, [Denbighshire, Wales]
Wales
Norfolk.
People mentioned
[Thomas of Lancaster], earl of Lancaster
Robert de Baldok (Baldock).
Note
The petition dates to c. 1326 based on references and grants which may relate to the petition, but which if not as a response to the petition are unlikely to be too much later (CPR 1324-7, pp.270-1; CCR 1323-7, p.573). The dating range 1318-1326 given by Rees is inexplicable especially as Rees's summary refers to the earl of Lancaster's death, so the petition can be no earlier than 1322 (Petitions Relating to Wales, pp.293-4).
