Reference
SC 8/170/8457
Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Mayor and people of the city of York.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The mayor and people request that Wykford be put to answer to them in the Bench or Exchequer for the wrong that he did them notwithstanding that it was done of the realm. They came upon an enemy ship charged with grain on the way to La Rochelle and took it to Bordeaux where Wykford came and took some of the grain from them and sold it and held and still holds their goods as many merchants and mariners in Bordeaux can attest.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be sent into the Exchequer and let the archbishop and others be called . . . [remainder largely illegible].
Places mentioned
York
Lauderge (Audenge), [Guyenne, France]
La Rochelle, [Saintonge, France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
Robert de Wykford (Wikeford), then constable of Bordeaux and now archbishop of Dublin.
Note
The guard note suggests a date range of 1376-1391, based on Wikeford's pontificate (1376-1390), but also notes that the petition refers to events in 48 Edw. III and suggests that the date may be c. 1377 seq. It seems likely that the petition does date to c. 1377.
