Description
Petitioners
People of the vill of Wiggenhall, Norfolk.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people request that the sheriff be commanded not to deliver the beasts of a rebel whose default of repair of the sea banks caused 200 acres to be flooded, as the failure of bank in the night could caused 2,000 acres of land to be lost to the sea. Ingaldesthorp and his companions were assigned by the king's father to ordain for the salvation of the marshland and for the repair of the sea banks and assigned keepers, the record and process being sent into Chancery and a writ made commanding the repair.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by writ comprising the effect of this petition to the sheriff that of the things taken for the repair of the banks and . . . he should not make delivery.
Places mentioned
Wiggenhall, Norfolk.
People mentioned
Thomas de Ingaldesthorp (Ingoldisthorpe).
Note
The petition probably dates to 1337 as it appears likely that the flooding referred to in the petition was the same flooding referred to in three other petitions from neighbouring communities (SC 8/76/3762; SC 8/78/3856; SC 8/152/7565).
