The Police Research and Planning Branch was set up in 1963 and is part of the Police Department of the Home Office. Until 1970 its head was an Inspector of Constabulary. After 1970 it was headed by a Deputy Chief Scientific Officer.
The Branch's brief was to develop new methods, equipment and techniques for use by the police, or to modify tried methods and design where necessary; to originate and carry out studies in police science; to provide technical control when such work was carried out in the universities or industry under contract; and to assist police forces by giving scientific and technical advice.
