Description
Petitioners
Adam Orleton, Bishop of Winchester.
Name(s)
Orleton, Adam
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Winchester
Nature of request
Adam, Bishop of Winchester states that on 22 April, in the fifth year of his reign, the King granted him, for a debt he owed him and for a certain sum paid by the Bishop at the Exchequer, the manors of Littlehampton and Woolbeeding, which belonged to John de Hastinges, together with other lands and tenements, until the majority of Laurence, John's son and heir. However, Edward de Seint Johan and Eve his wife deraigned these manors by an assize of novel disseisin, and the remaining lands are not sufficient to cover the debt. He requests the manor of Hawkley, which is also of Laurence's inheritance, which he now holds at farm, or other lands elsewhere. And as Hawkley is worth more than Littlehampton and Woolbeeding, he will pay the surplus at the Exchequer as a farm.
Nature of endorsement
He is to bring into Chancery the [transcript of] the record and process of the assize mentioned in the petition and when the said transcript and the commission made to the said Bishop have been seen, if it is found that he is expelled in this way from the said manors, then the Chancellor is to give the said Bishop due compensation from the first wardships and marriages to fall into the King's hand, or in some other suitable manner.
