Description
Petitioners
Thomas of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk.
Name(s)
Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Thomas, Earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England makes three requests:1) He states that in his first parliament after his coronation the King granted him 1000 marks worth of land, but that the King afterwards told him not to meddle with the manor of Barrow in Cheshire or with the manor of Datchet in Buckinghamshire, because they had been granted elsewhere before the grant was made to him, and that he would let him have their value elsewhere. He asks that he might have this.2) He states that he cannot have seisin of Newnham in Gloucestershire, because his charter wrongly says that it belonged to the Earl of Winchester. He requests a remedy.3) He was assigned part of the 1000 marks in cash, to be received from the farm of Dunwich, which he cannot have, as the people of Dunwich have an acquittance of their farm for fourteen years. He asks that he might have the value elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first point, it seems to the council, if it pleases the King, that the said manors are included in his charter, [and] that the King should let him have the said manors or elsewhere to the value. It seems the same with regard to all the other points.
