Nature of request
The petitioners state that the King had graciously ordered restitution of their ship and merchandise, taken from them at Milford Haven, by ships from Bristol, and that this ship, and some of the merchandise, had been seized by John Michel, King's serjeant, and held under safe-keeping at Bristol, but that most of the merchandise had been secretly removed and stolen by people of Bristol and the surrounding countryside. They request the King's commission to John Michel and to another serjeant to inquire into where these goods are, and to seize them if found and deliver them to the petitioners; and to arrest all those withholding these goods and to bring them before the King. They also request writs to the Mayor and Sheriffs of Bristol, ordering them to aid this inquiry, and telling them, and the people of the country, to make full restitution to the petitioners for their ship and goods, and commending the petitioners and the inquiry, and asking them not to allow any harm or damage to be done to them.
