Description
Petitioners
Tenants of Thorp, Egham, Cobham and Chobham.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The tenants of Thorp, Egham, Cobham and Chobham state that they were once tenants of the crown, but that since King Edgar gave their manors to the Abbot and convent of Chertsey they have held of them, by the same services by which they held of the crown. Now, however, the Abbot is imposing tallages which they never used to pay, and is distraining them for non-payment. They request a remedy, and that an end might be put to these tallages and they might be able to hold their lands and tenements as freely from the Abbot as they did from the crown.
