Name(s)
Talbot, John
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Occupation
sergeant-at-arms
Nature of request
John Talbot, sergeant-at-arms, and formerly servant to Thomas, Duke of Clarence, states that he had letters patent for an annuity to be received at the Exchequer, which, because of a difference of opinion among the Barons of the Exchequer about them, he returned to Chancery to be cancelled. The Barons of the Exchequer are now questioning the validity of these letters, whereas he understands that they were perfectly valid, and merely returned because of the difference of opinion. He asks that he might continue to receive the annuity, and that his letters patent might be of full force and effect.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
London
Middlesex.
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], Duke of Clarence.
Note
CPR 1441-6 p.269 is dated 14 May 1444, and the grant is backdated to Michaelmas before 11 December, 17 Henry VI (1438), as the petition says. This is the grant to replace the original letters mentioned by the petition. He says that he had allowance for the new grant until Michaelmas 23 Henry VI (1444). According to a petition from another sergeant-at-arms edited in Rot. Parl. vol. V, p.159a (no.8), John Talbot died on 28 January 26 Henry VI (1448): this petition would therefore seem to date from between 1444 and 1448.
