Nature of request
Thomas, prior of Southwick, states that Richard Spicer of Eastney and various servants and tenants of his seized a cartload of corn, from the Prior’s tithes, at Eastney, and refused to obey two orders from the sheriff to William Prewes, bailiff of the hundred, to have it replevied and delivered to the prior. They also forcibly rescued Richard when an order was issued to arrest him to give surety of the peace to John Cook, servant of the prior, leaving some of those who came to arrest him in danger of death, stealing their gear, and threatening others, and again forcibly rescued him when he was arrested by the undersheriff at Winchester. The prior requests remedy.
