Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of the chapel of St Martin le Grand of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that they have of the gift of the King's ancestors, two carucates of land in free alms for two prebends in Colchester in Essex, but that one Peter de Cusance, a layman who has the prebends at farm has sold a great part of the lands to one John de Pointon, for himself and his heirs in fee in perpetuity. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The Escheator is to be ordered by writ of Chancery to inquire into these alienations and to return the inquisition before the Chancellor.
Places mentioned
St Martin le Grand, London
[Godichestre (Colchester), Essex].
People mentioned
Peter de Cusance
John de Pointon.
Note
Edited in Rot. Parl. vol.I, p.278a-b (no. 18) as belonging to the years 1308-1309. PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 273-280, no. 28 confirms this date as probable. The place name is now missing, but Rot. Parl. Vol.I, p.278 (Hales' transcript) gives the name as 'Godichestre', which is probably Good Easter where St Martin's held a prebend.
