Reference
SC 8/128/6398A
Date
[1331]
Description
Petitioners
John de Nicole (Lincoln), citizen of London.
Name(s)
de Nicole (Lincoln), John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
John de Nicole requests remedy, stating that he made purveyances under a spoken agreement with the King's father, and petitioned an earlier parliament at Westminster for payment. This was ordered, and a copy of the writ to the Treasurer and Barons is attached, but when he presented his account at the Exchequer, they refused to make payment as he did not have written proof of the original order.
Nature of endorsement
Because he has shown the Council a privy seal letter ordering the purveyance, and because members of the Council have testified that the King made such a verbal order, the Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are ordered to audit the account if they have not already done so, and to make the necessary payments or assignments, despite the lack of documentation.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
[Edward II, King of England].
Note
This petition was clearly presented to the Westminster parliament of September 1331, as the resultant order to the Treasurer was issued on 18 October 1331, reciting the details of this petition and making the order in almost exactly the same terms as those given in the endorsement. The earlier petition referred to in this document was presumably presented to the Westminster parliament of November 1330, which resulted in the order of 26 January 1331, a copy of which was submitted with this petition (now SC 8/128/6398B). The privy seal letter mentioned in the endorsement is evidently the letter to the sheriff of London and others to assist Nicole mentioned in SC 8/128/6398B.
