[c. 1381]
Description
Petitioners
John Mareys (Marreys).
Name(s)
Mareys (Marreys), John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
John Mareys requests that a tenement in Castle Baynard ward in London be returned to him in accordance with a statute made at Westminster at the quindene of Michaelmas 1362, so that he may use the income to pay off a debt. He states that he bought the tenement from another John Mareys, a servant of Edward III, but it has since been taken into the king's hands on account of a debt owed to the king's grandfather.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Castle Baynard ward, London.
People mentioned

John Mareys (Marreys), servant of Edward III.
Note
An order to deliver seisin of this messuage to John Dunmowe (for whom see SC 8/125/6218B), given on 30 November 1382 (CCR 1381-5, p.191), recounts the events surrounding this dispute. It states that the messuage was delivered, on surreptitiously obtained letters, to John Marreys in July 1381, and it seems quite probable that this delivery was a result of the present petition. The precise relationship between SC 8/125/6218A & B is unclear, but it seems unlikely that Marreys would have submitted a copy of Edward III's grant of the tenement to Dunmowe as evidence for his own claim. The document at SC 8/125/6218B may well originally have accompanied the later petition from Dunmowe mentioned in the 1382 order, and later placed here in error.
