Reference
SC 8/121/6030
Date
[1402]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Lyme Regis.
Addressees
Commons.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Lyme Regis request a reduction in their fee farm, exemption from other charges and the recently-granted fifteenth, and the cancellation of arrears, on account of their great poverty. They state that they are also on the frontier of the realm, and that many of the burgesses have left the town due to the great charges made upon it.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Sue to the King.[on dorse] Sue to the king and he will do what seems right in this case.
Places mentioned
Lyme Regis, Dorset
Note
This petition (along with others which together once formed a file) is assigned to the parliament of Autumn 1402 in Rot. Parl. Vol. III, p.515a. A note on the guard dates it this petition (and hence all the others) to? 1410, with reference to the granting of the burgesses' wishes on 8 May 1410 (CPR 1408-13, p.202), but this was clearly in response to another petition, as the enrolment of this petition (Rot. Parl. Vol. III, p.640a) contains far more details than the present document. The date given in Rot. Parl. would seem to be correct.
