[-] to Cumberland: newsletter from Ghent. Surrender of Oudenaarde. After a visit to Bruges the [French] king has marched the army towards Alost, hoping to spend some time in Dendermonde. The king hopes to take Ostend before returning to Versailles. Marshal Saxe is recovering daily and believes himself to be out of danger. The elder son of the pretender [Charles Edward], after being in hiding for 15 months, embarked at Nantes on the 15 [July] with two merchant ships and sailed for the British coast. He is rumoured to have landed in Scotland. Although he has no troops, his friends consider his chances good. The French minister has denied any knowledge of it. Dated at Ghent. ff. 203, 204
