Report of Beaumont Hotham on 1 collective petition (16 people, including the prisoners mother from St. George's Field, and many with occupations) on behalf of William Smith [this was a mistake by the judge; it was John Smith], convicted at the Kent Lent Assizes, for an assault and robbery on Richard Turn, barber, and taking a watch, razors and a hat. Grounds for clemency: youth (19 years), was duped by 'Sharpers', offers to enlist in HM. Forces of the East India Company, first offence and is suffering greatly in gaol. Initial sentence: death[?], commuted to 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist in HM. Forces of the East India Company. Folios 177-180. See also HO 47/14/35, folios 185-188.
