Report of G.L. Newnham on 1 collective petition (in the name of Thomas Perry, gentleman, and Samuel Owen, brass founder, signed by 14 people, from Birmingham) on behalf of William Turner, apprentice to a brass founder, convicted the Warwickshire Lent Assizes in 1791, for stealing wearing apparel, property of Thomas Perry. There is also a letter from Alexander Thomson passing the papers (mistakenly referred to him by the Home Office) to Newnham. The are covering letters from Henry Clay, a former High Sheriff, and Sir. G. Shuckburgh MP. Grounds for clemency: youth (19 years), poor state of health (scrophulous disorder), previous good character, had worked for a single employer for 7 years, his parents are disconsolate, his employer would take him back, and a key character witness was unable to attend court due to illness. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks in favour of mercy. Folios 91-100.
