Report of Beaumont Hotham on Thomas Smith on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Thomas Smith, convicted under the 'Black Act' at the Kent Assizes at Maidstone, for an attempted highway robbery on Mr Hinchman and shooting at Benjamin Winckworth on the Dartford Road. Grounds for clemency: no property was taken (no robbery occurred), has a wife and child now grieving and promises future good behaviour. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 87-90.
