Holdernesse to Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick, partly in cipher: regarding the five free battalions he refers him to what the duke of Newcastle will write to him. Regarding the Hessian light cavalry, the king approves Ferdinand's suggestion of a compromise. He encloses copies of the memorandum presented to Granby, the king's reply and the two declarations he ordered Holdernesse to sign. The king is prepared to treat the Brunswick troops on the same footing as those of Hesse. He encloses: an extract of a letter on the French plan to form two armies on the Rhine; a letter from King Stanislas, duke of Lorraine and Barr, to the king; the note by the French ambassador which accompanied it; the king's reply. Speculation on Stanislas's letter and who might be behind it. Dated at Whitehall. ff. 23-26
