Nature of request
The petitioners ask that various tenants of Lord Welles be summoned to appear before the bench to answer charges concerning attacks on them and their property. Following a legal dispute between the people of Spalding and Pinchbeck and Lord Welles over attacks in 1449 on their houses and property, on 1 April 1450 Welles sent over 100 men from his castle at Maxey into the parish of Spalding and assaulted many of the tenants, killing John Ankes, injuring various others and stealing goods. The petitioners have already complained to the king as their lord, who ordered Welles to cease the attacks and appear before him at Leicester on 20 April, but Welles failed to appear.
