Thomas Grigg (or Gregg), a fireman on board the Virginius, who was executed in Cuba in 1873. Governor states that he has endeavoured to find near relatives to whom compensation of £300 might be paid, and has received applications from four women: Samus Sealy, Chester Goodman, Margaret Ann Bryan, and Eliza Jane Grigg. Investigations into their claims, details of which are given, show that there is no foundation to the claims of the first two. The claim of the last-named is still being considered, but he states: 'Although Bryan cannot adduce evidence sufficient to establish her claim in a Court of Law, and is, in her own statement, somewhat vague in the matter of dates, there seems little moral doubt that she is the mother of the man who was executed in Cuba'.
