Nature of request
The petitioners show that in year twenty-nine of King Edward [III] [1355-6], the king ordered six foresters at his wages and customs, that is to say: three in Clarendon, two in Grovely, and one in Melchet, to keep the vert and venison in the aforesaid forests, to which there was insufficient answer, by which certain men were granted lands for the service of keeping the same, that is to say: Hugh Cheyne (two foresters for Laverstock and Milford), Roger Clenum (one forester for Pitton), John Blaunchard (one forester for Grovely), John Butesthorn (one forester for Mulchet), which were sufficient to answer to the king etc. The petitioners seek discharge from the excessive costs, and for the saving of vert and venison that the king order such tenants to have sufficient to answer to him and to the petitioners for the offices appurtenant to the said lands, in order to have other tenants.
Nature of endorsement
Alan de Buxhill, Keeper of all the Forests, appeals for more information to the king's council upon this matter.
