Nature of request
The petitioner seeks confirmation of his right to present to All Hallows the Great in London, through an order from King Edward [III] (recently dead), and contrary to the claims of Dame Elizabeth, who was the wife of Lord Despenser. He shows that in 1373-4 he was granted the church. The petitioner was installed, but then in the following May livery was assigned in chancery ... patronage of the said church to Dame Elizabeth as part of her dower. In August the petitioner (without knowledge of the said livery) ... Potyn to the same church without fraud or evil intent, and Fenrother ... letters patent in King Edward's chancery. Fenrother was installed in the church and continued in peaceful possession for six months and more, until 21 February 1376 (or 1377), when the patent was suddenly challenged by Dame Elizabeth, who purchased a writ of quare impedit to the bishop of London ... and went to the king's court. Dame Elizabeth recovered against the petitioner by a judgement awarded there, and on the strength of this recovery a writ was sent to the bishop for the admittance of her presentation to the church.
