Description
Petitioners
Adam de Corbridge.
Name(s)
de Corbridge, Adam
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks recovery of various properties in Berwick-upon-Tweed now in the king's hands. He shows that his uncle Ralph Philyp (whose heir he is) was seised as of his right and heritage of various tenements in Berwick until ejected by war, namely, eight tenements in Soutergate, another in Uddynggate, three in Briggate, one in Waldefgate, and a croft in Kergate, three crofts outside the walls of Berwick with a rent of 16s from the tenement lately of Adam de Banysclif and John Banysclif in St Marygate, and a mark of rent from Coloyne's tenement in Crossgate, which tenements Robert de Bruce, late King of Scots, gave after the death of the said Ralph to Louwedre, because the Adam was English and living in allegiance to the English king, by reason of whose forfeiture they are in the king's hands.1)
Nature of endorsement
They say that Ralph Philyp was seised of the tenements written herein in the time of King Alexander and King John, until the town of Berwick was captured by the king's grandfather, who granted all the aforesaid to various tenants who held them until the town was taken by Bruce, when they were all granted to Robert de Louwedre senior, and Robert his son, through whose forfeiture they are now in the king's hands, and that the petitioner, who is kinsman and right heir and was always faithful to the king and not his enemy.2) Let him have a writ to the sheriff of Berwick to deliver all the tenements herein (if they are in the king's hands and not another) to hold just as the aforesaid Ralph held, saving the king's rights and whosoever else etc.
