Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Coggeshall.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Coggeshall state that they have always had view of frankpledge in their manor of Tolleshunt Major, until they were disseised by a bailiff of Edward I. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] An inquisition is to be held.[On dorse] Certain faithful people are to be appointed in Essex to inquire, in the presence of the current Bailiff etc. into the truth of the contents of the petition and into other articles. And the memoranda of the Exchequer are to be examined to see if anything can be found on behalf of the King through which the complainants can be barred from their claim. And when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery and the search has been completed, the King is further to be informed.
Places mentioned
Coggeshall, [Essex]
Tolleshunt Major, [Essex]
Essex.
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England
William de Tolleshunte (Tolleshunt), Abbot of Coggeshall.
Note
The fact that this petition refers to Edward I as 'le Roy Edward qe mort est', rather than the King's grandfather, and the mention in the endorsement of an inquisition (SC 8/98/4873) and a searching of the Exchequer (SC 8/98/4874) strongly suggests that this is the petition from 1 Edward III mentioned in SC 8/98/4871.
