Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Coggeshall state that in the reign of Henry III Philip de Bovile gave them the manor of Tolleshunt Major with its appurtenances, including view of frankpledge, which they held peacefully until Roger de Wythermundesford, Edward I's Bailiff of Dengie hundred, expelled William de Toleshunt, then Abbot, from that view, which has been in the King's hand ever since. They also state that an inquisition has been held in response to a petition presented by them on this in the King's first year, which has found that they ought to hold it, and that the Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer have certified that they can find no reason why they ought not to hold it: so they ask the King to grant them a charter to hold it again peacefully.
