Reference
SC 8/98/4868
Date
[1337]
Description
Petitioners
Richard Coef, son of Geoffrey Coef.
Name(s)
Coef, Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Richard, son of Geoffrey Coef, states that he sued an assize of novel disseisein against Reginald de Frome and others, concerning lands in Compton Chamberlayne, but that because Reginald was convicted of a false oath, all the lands and tenements in his hand were taken into the King's hand, and his assize has been delayed. He asks the King to send a writ to the justices appointed to hear assizes in Wiltshire to inquire into this disseisin and to do justice to the parties.
Nature of endorsement
The justices are to be ordered that if they have stayed proceedings for the reason given in the petition, then they are to proceed to hold the assize, notwithstanding the said claim: provided that they do not proceed to judgment without consulting the King.
Places mentioned
Compton Chamberlayne, [Wiltshire]
Wiltshire.
People mentioned
Geoffrey Coef
Reginald de Frome.
Note
SC 8/98/4869 is the record of the assize in this case, held on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday, 11 Edward III (1337), adjourned at the point when the lands are stated to be in the King's hand. The parties are given a day on the Monday after mid-Lent next: the petition would therefore seem datable to 1337.
