Description
Petitioners
Makers and sellers of worsted cloth in Norfolk.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that they and their trade are on the point of bring ruined by the ordinances that this cloth is to be taken to Calais only outside the realm, as it is of such poor quality that few people will buy it, and it is mostly manufactured for export to the Saracens: whereas they are now delayed in Calais, where their cloth rots for want of a buyer. They have twice sued to the council and had permission to take their cloth elsewhere, but have done nothing since the latest prohibition. They ask the King and council to have pity on them, and to allow them to take their cloth abroad freely as they did before.
Nature of endorsement
The King has granted to them that they may go wherever they wish overseas with the said cloth, except to his enemies, for a certain period at the King's pleasure, paying the customs and subsidies due for them.
Places mentioned
Norfolk
Calais. [France].
People mentioned
The Saracens.
Note
CPR 1377-81 p.75 is dated 25 November 1377, and would seem to be a response to this petition.CPR 1388-92 p.248 is dated 13 May 1390, but as it specifically refers to 'sengleworstede' cloth, and makes no mention of a time limit for this, it would seem likely to be in response to a later petition.
