Description
Petitioners
Prior and canons of Leighs.
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The Prior and canons of Leighs state that they and their predecessors were peacefully seised, by right of their church, of the manor of Dernford in Sweffling, Suffolk, until Michaelmas in the King's tenth year, when certain servants of Robert Wynkefeld, knight, Justice of the Peace in Suffolk, entered the manor with force and arms, claiming by colour of a forged enfeoffment made by Adam Hacon to Robert Wynkefeld that it had been given to Adam and his heirs in perpetuity, although Adam had title in the manor only for a term of years; and Robert continues to uphold this forged document, and to occupy the manor. And he had a canon who entered the manor arrested, and certain goods of the Prior's seized, which he would not release without payment, and still has some of them. And although these matters have been sent to arbitration, Robert had the Prior, the canon who had entered the manor, and the farmer of the manor indicted in his sessions of enetering Adam's house and robbing him. As the common law can give him no remedy, because of Robert's power in the area, he requests a remedy from the King.
