Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/83/4103
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
William de Graunson (Grandison).
Name(s)
de Graunson (Grandison), William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Graunson requests that the king will ordain his final will on the matter of the jewels that the late king put in the keeping of the executors of the will of the king's uncle for certain reasons because nothing has been done on this, and the petitioner is greatly troubled by the execution of the testament and has been put to great cost because of it. He requests that the execution be able to be performed, because, without delivery it is not able to be done.
Nature of endorsement
The king has assigned certain persons to consider the thing, and to make delivery to him.
People mentioned
Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1318 on the basis of a licence for alienation of rent granted to the petitioner to found a chantry for the late earl and his wife. However, the guard suggests a date of 1320 as this is on the basis of other petitions in this file being of around this date. The earl had died in 1296, the petition refers to the earl being the current king's uncle, and the petition is answered in French, which only becomes common after 1322. A date range of 1307-1322 is conceivable, but seems unlikely; c. 1318 offers a speculative alternative.
