Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/83/4102
Date
[1309-c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Gorges.
Name(s)
de Gorges, Ralph
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Gorges requests grace and remedy as he has been ousted from the keepership of Whittlewood Forest which he was granted by the King's father. He was in the king's service in Gascony and was captured and imprisoned for many years.
Nature of endorsement
Let the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer be ordered by writ of Chancery that they are to call those of the council that wish to call, and they do what ought to be done according to right and reason.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
Scotland
Whittlewood Forest, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
John de Tyngewyke (Tingewick).
Note
The petition is problematic to date. Roger Damory was granted the forestership of Whittlewood in December 1309, in succession to Gorges, and was regranted it in 1313 (CPR 1307-13, pp.223, 571). A Latin summary of another petition by the same petitioner on the same matter with a different response was enrolled on the parliament roll of Hillary 1315, and it is difficult to say whether this petition is earlier or later than this enrolled petition. The guard notes suggest that the petition is as late as 1320 only on the basis of other petitions in this file being of around this date. Although it likely that the petition is earlier than 1320, because of the uncertainty the petition has been dated to c. 1313-c. 1320.
