Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/81/4003
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John Jorge (George) of Wiltshire.
Name(s)
Jorge (George), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Jorge requests remedy as he was disseised of the manor of Marston Meysey by Despenser and John and Henry de Meysey after he, his wife and son were enfeoffed of it by John de Meysey. When he requested an oyer et terminer he was imprisoned.
Nature of endorsement
Faithful men are to be assigned in Chancery to enquire of the disseisin in the presence of the keeper, and of the imprisonment and return the inquisition and certification into Chancery, and the king should be certified.
Places mentioned
Wiltshire
Marston Meysey, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
John de Meisy (Meysey), son and heir of John de Meysey
John de Meisy (Meysey)
Margery [Jorge], wife of the petitioner
Thomas [Jorge], son of the petitioner
Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester
John de Meisy (Meysey), parson
Henry [de Meisy (Meysey)], brother of John de Meysey, parson.
Note
The petition is very likely to date to 1327 as it clearly concerns a disseisin made by Hugh de Despenser, and is unlikely to predate the fall of the Despensers. Documents in the close rolls and miscellaneous inquisitions relate to the recovery of the manor of Marston Meysey by one John de Meysey (CIM 1307-49, no.1020; CCR 1327-30, pp.495-6). It is possible that this John de Meysey is one and the same with John Jorge, as both have similar tales to tell, though if they are not, two separate disputes were going on over the same manor, with John de Meysey recovering the manor, and no trace surviving of the Jorge claim except within this petition.
