Reports that there is no eligible candidate for the position of rector of Smiths and Hamilton Parish. Requests that a clergyman be appointed from England. Encloses a letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury from Church Warden John C Davis and the Vestrymen of Hamilton Parish - James L Pearman, Richard H Davis, and P B Outerbridge; a letter to the bishop of Newfoundland from J W Mercer, J P Ceorn (?) and the members of Parliament; a copy of the resolution of the parishioners of Hamiton made at a meeting held on 17 January; and copies of petitions from the parishioners of Hamilton to the governor and the bishop of Newfoundland. Each petition has more than 140 signatories including Elmira A Burrows, Ann Hill, Thomas Furbert, James Burgess, John M Fubler, Emily Fox, Eliza J Hollis, Samuel F Trott, Prince Hodgden, and Charlotte Pearman.
