Petitioners
Robert de la Vale (Delaval).
Name(s)
Vale (Delaval), Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Vale requests that he be granted a portion of the victuals to sustain himself and to be taken at Newcastle for he was captured at the battle of Stirling and had to ransom himself for 500 marks, all his lands are destroyed and burnt, and he and his men defended Tynemouth priory against Middleton at his own cost.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Stirling (Bannockburn), [Stirlingshire, Scotland]
Tynemouth, [Northumberland]
Newcastle-upon-Tyne, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Gilbert de Middelton (Middleton).
Note
The petition dates to c. 1318 as, as Fraser notes, initial liveries of wine were made to impoverished Northumbrian knights in November 1318 (Northumberland Petitions, p.148 (no.122); CPR 1317-21, p.247). In addition the reference to the defense of Tynemouth priory against Gilbert de Middleton confirms this date, Middleton being executed in 1318.
