Date
[c. 1275-c. 1290]
Description
Petitioners
William de Valence.
Name(s)
de Valence, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Valence is disturbed in his wood of Collingbourne by Columbers against the purport of his charter, and he has a writ of the king on this but nothing has been done.
Nature of endorsement
Columbers is ordered just as he has been elsewhere ordered by the king to permit Valence to take wood just as he was accustomed to do.
Places mentioned
Ceth (Chute) Forest, [Wiltshire]
Colingeborn (Collingbourne) wood, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
Matthew de Columbers, Keeper of Chute Forest
Note
The guard note attribute a date of before 1285 on the basis that a reference in the Close Rolls records John de Insula as keeper of this forest (CCR 1279-88, p.343). However, although the hand and diplomatic clearly mark this out as an early petition from Edward I's reign, it is not clear how it is known that Colombers is an earlier keeper than Insula so a date of c. 1275-c. 1290 has been adopted here.
