Reference
SC 8/78/3881
Date
[1307-1324]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Westminster.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request that it be ordered that the bread and ale given to many clerks of the Exchequer and of the Receipt from the cellar of the abbey cease since it was a courtesy introduced by Abbot Ware when he was treasurer, and the same is still extorted from them.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are ordered to call before them the ministers of the Exchequer referred to in the petition in the presence of the abbot as to whether bread and ale was given of old, or more recently introduced. The king is to be certified upon this.
Places mentioned
Westminster.
People mentioned
Richard de Ware, late Abbot of Westminster and treasurer.
Note
The petition comes from Edward II's reign, and probably from early in the reign, as it refers to the late king, and also refers to one of Edward I's treasurers, Richard Ware, late abbot of Westminster, who died in 1283. The duplicate, SC 8/149/7411, can be dated to before 1324 by the death of John de Foxley, mentioned in the endorsement.
