Reference
SC 8/78/3880
Date
[c. 1301]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Westminster.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request that they be granted some land in tenancy for a term of years so that they are able to be acquitted of a debt in which they are obliged for the king, and so that they may repair their house. The king has granted allowance in their farms and debts to other religious houses also obliged in this same debt, but the abbot and convent of Westminster have no such farms or debts.
Nature of endorsement
They should come before the treasurer and barons at the Exchequer and discuss with them some form of competency for the king's exoneration, but first they should show in the same place the letters that they have of the king, and a writ should be sent to the treasurer and barons on this.
Places mentioned
Westminster.
Note
The petition dates to 1331 as the original allowance give to the other abbots and to the abbot of Westminster was made on 26 February 1301, and the petition is likely to be shortly after this (CCR 1296-1302, p.430).
