Description
Petitioners
Proctor of William de Weston.
Addressees
[King and council].
Occupation
Proctor of William de Weston.
Nature of request
The proctor of William de Weston states that when the King sent his master as an envoy to Spain, he took him and all his possessions, and especially his prebend of Leighton Buzzard into his protection, and that he, the proctor, fearing that some disturbance would be made in this prebend, delivered a petition to the present parliament: but that while that petition was pending, the Sheriff of Bedfordshire came with a great number of men from the county, chosen to go to Gascony, with a warrant ordering that all lay force in the church which prevented the Bishop of Lincoln from exercising his spiritual authority there should be ousted, and expelled his master from possession of the prebend: in despite of the King and although the Bishop of Lincoln did not come there to exercise any spiritual office. He requests a remedy in this parliament, so that his lord's absence abroad might not harm him.
Nature of endorsement
Before the King (coram rege), because it touches the royal right.Because the instructions our lord the King gave the sheriff to oust lay force were made on the information of the Bishop, as is usual, he is to sue to recover his possession as seems best to him to be done, according to law and reason. And if he believes that he has been disseised or that some other trespass has been done to him, he is to come to Chancery and sue there at common law.
