Description
Petitioners
Alice de la Venele, formerly of Bury St Edmunds.
Name(s)
Venele, Alice
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Alice de la Venele states that when John de Norwyz, who was to have married her, purchased writs of Chancery against Nicholas Fuke, Bailiff of Bury St Edmunds, John de Hokewold, and others, for having expelled her from her free tenement in Bury St Edmunds, they had him imprisoned and falsely indicted of theft, and would have had him hanged if he had not been saved by clergy. As they were then plotting her death, she took herself to sanctuary. She was then badly counselled to abjure the land and seek the grace of the King in Gascony, so she sued to the King for two years there, but was told that she could have no remedy until the King's coming to England, and that he would have the matter inquired into by his ministers then. She requests an inquiry by good men of Norfolk and Suffolk; and, as she is in a foreign land, she asks the King to take matters into his hand and to give her a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The King is to provide for the bailiwicks of the magnates. The King can do nothing for this, on account of the recognisance.

Note
The references to the King being in Gascony, and to the petitioner suing in a foreign land, suggest that this petition is likely to date to the period of Edward I's stay in Gascony in 1286-1289, possibly to around 1288, as the petitioner says that she has been suing to the King in Gascony for two years.
