Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/75/3704
Date
[1323-1324]
Description
Petitioners
John Southcouper, burgess of Kingston upon Hull.
Name(s)
Southcouper, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
burgess of Kingston upon Hull
Nature of request
John Southcouper states that the King owes him a sum of money for carrying wine and flour from Bordeaux to Newcastle upon Tyne in the last year, for which he has a bill under the seal of Roger de Waltham, formerly Keeper of the Great Wardrobe, and which Roger is refusing to pay him. He requests that the Treasurer might be ordered either to pay him, or to allow this sum against the debts he owes the King.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. The Treasurer and Barons are to be ordered that, when they have examined his bill and called those who are to be called, they are to do justice and reason.
Places mentioned
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Roger de [Waltham], Keeper of the Wardrobe.
Note
Roger de Waltham was Keeper of the Wardrobe between 1 May 1322 and 20 October 1323. This accords with the petitioner's statement in SC 8/75/3703 that he carried the wine and flour from Bordeaux to Newcastle in the king's sixteenth year (8 July 1322 - 7 July 1323) (the amounts in the two petitions, and in SC 8/75/3702, tally). This petition seems to state that this took place during the last year, and would therefore seem to date from 1323-1324.
