Reference
SC 8/71/3517
Date
[? 1316]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Scarborough.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses request that the grant of the keeping of the quay in the town to a stranger for his life for his maintenance be repealed since they had a grant of quayage to maintain the quay for five years, which term is not yet expired, and the town will be ruined if the grant is not repealed.1)
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council, if it please the king, that such custodies ought not to be granted for terms of life, and quayage ought not to be granted but for a term, and be collected by people of the town who ought to answer for it.2) Let certain people be assigned to audit the account of the collectors . . . so that a commission be . . . to anybody to be repealed.
Places mentioned
Scarborough, [North Riding of York].
Note
The guard notes link this to a patent roll reference for an oyer and terminer into the misappropriation of sums raised from quayage by the burgesses (CPR 1313-17, p.586). It is not entirely clear that this reference relates to this petition directly so that the date ascribed to the petition based on this must be suspect, hence? 1316.
