Date
[? c. 1372]
Description
Petitioners
William de Prestwold, Master of the Order of Sempringham (Gilbertines).
Name(s)
de Prestwold, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Prestwold, Master of the Order of Sempringham, states that he is being hindered in pursuing his right in the court of Rome, in matters concerning the privileges and rights of the Order of Sempringham, by the king's prohibitions. He asks that he and his people might have licence to purchase delegacies and conservations in the court of Rome and to sue them there and in the king's realm, in matters that do not concern his crown or the laws of England, but only the privileges and rights of their order.
Nature of endorsement
To avoid the damages and losses that could occur to the parties if the pleas were held in the court of Rome, he is to have permission to purchase delegacies and conservations of the court, to be determined in England, provided that he does not go abroad without the king's permission.
Note
Dated on the guard to '1364 -? 1393', and then to '? 1372', with reference to Calendar of Entries in the Papal Registers relating to Great Britain and Ireland, Papal Letters vol. IV, pp.182-183. This is dated 7 May 1372 and is the modification of an indult granted by Innocent VI to Robert, lately Master of the order of Sempringham, granting various privileges to the Master of Sempringham, and modified as a result of a dispute between John, Bishop of Lincoln, and William, Robert's successor. It would seem likely that this was the business pursued by William in the Court of Rome: if so, the petition would seem to be earlier that 1372.
