Reference
SC 8/65/3232
Date
[c. 1300-c. 1325]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and canons of Healaugh Park.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and canons of Healaugh Park state that they are impoverished and too poor to serve God in the number that was ordained at the time of their foundation, because modern people have less devotion to God than their predecessors and because most of their lands are in the north where they have been destroyed by the Scots, and they ask that they might be able to acquire lands, tenements, rents or appropriation of churches to the value of £10 to support themselves.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have permission of the king's grace to acquire 10 marks worth either in advowsons or in lands and tenements, except for lands and advowsons held of the king in chief.
Places mentioned
Healaugh Park, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Jarum (Yarm), [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Scotland.
Note
Dated on the guard to 1334, but the reference is spurious and the petition is dated here notionally to the first quarter of the fourteenth century on the basis of the hand and the Latin endorsement.
