Description

Five sheets of drawings of a proposed lighthouse at Europa Point, Gibraltar. (1) 'Plan 1. Sketch of Europa Gibraltar'. Scale: 1 inch to 400 feet [1:48,000]. (2) 'Plan 2... Outline Trace from Reiner's Chart of the Strait of Gibraltar. published by Purdy, Tooke's Court'. Scale (calculated from latitude): 15.8 inches to 45 minutes [1:207,524]. (3) 'Plan 3... Section of proposed Light House at Europa'. Scale: 1 inch to 20 feet [1:2,400]; '20 f t.' has been crossed out and 'query 10 feet to an Inch' inserted. (4) 'Plan 4... Proposed Light House from the North West, the lantern drawn as it appears from the West'. Scale: 1 inch to 12 feet; '12 f t.' has been crossed out and 'query 10 feet to an Inch' inserted in pencil. (5) 'Plan 5... Proposed Light House for Estimate 2'. Measurement above sea level given in right margin. Scale: 1 inch to 12 feet [1:144]; '12 f t.' has been crossed out and 'query 10 feet to an Inch' inserted in pencil. All signed by Edward Aldrich, Lt RE; and by Cornelius Mann, Col CRE, to accompany his report dated 14 April 1836. The amendments to the scales are all initialled by 'S.B.H.' [S B Howlett].
