Description

Two plans on one sheet, each entitled 'Port of Hartlepool'; surveyed by A & R Reed of Stockton upon Tees, and 1a Adelphi Terrace, London, 1848. Extracted from papers relating to improvements to Hartlepool pier and port, 1840-1859. By Day & Son, lithographers to the Queen. Endorsed: 'Hartlepool Plan'. (10a) 'Collieries and Railways in Connection with the West Harbour and Docks, 1848'. Outline map of County Durham, part of Northumberland and North Yorkshire, showing the coast from South Shields to Hartlepool and inland to Bishop Auckland. Shows the Rivers Tyne, Wear and Tees; some terrain, hill shading; major towns and harbours. Scale: 1 inch to 3 miles [1:190,080]. (10b) 'Hartlepool Bay and West Harbour and Docks'. Map showing coastline between Hart Warren and Seaton Carew, cliffs, low water line; navigation buoys and lights, entrance bearing to West Harbour, principal buildings; Leeds and Hartlepool Railway. Scale: about 1 inch to 16 chains [1:12,672]; scale bar also in feet. Compass indicator (some distortion). Dimensions of plans: (10a) 51 cm x 35.5 cm; (10b) 51 cm x 35 cm.
