Newcastle to Cumberland: in view of the weakness of the Dutch, the king is in favour of putting an end to the war. The French are likely to agree to better terms than those proposed by Saxe the previous year. Sandwich is to find out from St Severin whether this is true. It would be to the advantage of both the Netherlands and Britain if Britain were to occupy Ostend. Dated (OS) at Whitehall. ff. 77-82
