Reference
SC 8/58/2895
Date
[c. 1350]
Description
Petitioners
John de Lodewyk; Margaret de Lodewyk, wife of John de Lodewyk; John Malewayn.
Name(s)
de Lodewyk; de Lodewyk; Malewayn, John; Margaret; John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek recovery of certain lands and tenements in the city of London. They show that Maud died seised thereof after which they descended to Margery, then wife of John de Malewayn, and Margaret [de Lodewyk], as Maud's daughters and heirs. For this reason other lands and tenements of John Malewayn in the city were taken into the king's hands (as appears on record) and then Ardern, who was one of Maud's executors, by reason of certain provisions in her will, namely that movable and immovable goods were granted to the king contrary to the law and customs of the city, and for this reason still remain in the king's hands.
Nature of endorsement
Coram Rege.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Maud [de Lodewyk]
Margery [Malewayn], then wife of John Malewayn
John de Ardern, of the Augustinian Order.
Note
There is no certain dating; the notes on the guard indicate a date in the late 1350s because of the floruit of the petitioner; it is dated here, notionally, and on the basis of the hand, to the middle of the fourteenth century. It appears to be part of a longer petition.
