The poor people of Garthorpe, Crowle, Luddington and Amcotts

Nature of request
1) The petitioners request remedy so that they are not disinherited since although they hold their lands freely, during the reign of Henry III the abbot of Selby to whom their lands had been granted extorted rents and services from them. When they challenged this and attempted to purchase remedy in the court of the king, the abbot, by false allegation, had them imprisoned in the Marshalsea, and has claimed them as his neifs.2) The abbot with others, namely Wynterton, Waterton and Smith by malicious conspiracy have attempted to ruin and destroy Profet and Fitz John, two poor people of the vills by bills of trespass.3) The abbot is levying 200 marks from them maliciously although they have been acquitted of this . . .1)

Concerning the first point they should sue at the . . . for their lands and of the trespass.2) Concerning the alienation let it be ordered to the escheator that he make enquiry of this and do on it what pertains to his office.3) Concerning the other part let it be ordered to the justices before whom it has been arraigned that if . . . by their poverty they should give to them . . . King appears thus that prejudice not be done . . .
